why was there a shift to mercantilism after the English Civil War?


      A. England had incurred many debts from wars in North America and wanted the colonies to help pay
      B. Parliament wanted to punish the colonies which had allied with the Crown during the war

what was the ideal for 17th century English households?

      A. Men owned their wives and kept them in the home to control their labor

      B. Men hired and supervised field workers so that women could supervise work in they dairy, gardens and kitchens

      C. Women were expected to work in the fields until they were married, so many people married very young

      D. Men whose wives worked in the fields were taxed, and so most women worked in the home to avoid this tax

  • colonial legislation foundational to political rights and social organization

  • royal governors seen as proxy for the Crown in local parliaments

  • 1700: increasing tension over who has authority to govern
